DIY ‘Peppermint Pattie’ Lip Balm

After a little experimenting, I’m proud to say that this cool and refreshing lip balm turned out perfectly!   Creating DIY oils and balms is like baking.  The amounts of each ingredient, and how you blend them, really matters.  I tried a few different combinations, and came up with the ideal DIY ‘Peppermint Pattie’ lip balm for winter.  It really smells like a York Peppermint Pattie!

The scent and firmness of the balm are the two key essential elements I had to get right.   Once you know the equation, the process is very quick and easy.

  1.  1 Tbsp coconut oil
  2.  1 Tbsp peppermint extract
  3.  1 Tsp almond oil
  4.  2 Tbsp soy wax
  5.  2  Tbsp cocoa butter (It actually does smell like chocolate!).
  6.  1 mini Altoids mint container or other small container.

Step 1:  Prepare your container by emptying its contents and wiping it clean.

Step 2:  In a small bowl, whisk together the coconut oil, peppermint extract and almond oil with a fork, until the lumps are gone.

Step 3:  Create a small double boiler.  Find a small pot and bowl that fit each other as you see below.  Fill the pot with about 2 inches of water, and place the bowl on top.  Put it over medium-high heat.

Step 4.  Add the soy wax and cocoa butter to the bowl.  Let them sit over the heat until fully melted.

Step 5:  Once melted, pour the hot wax mixture into the coconut oil and peppermint mixture.  Whisk with a fork to blend.

Step 6:  Immediately, spoon the mix carefully into the container.  If there is spillage, don’t worry.  It’s easily cleaned up later.  (Using this Altoids container, I found a little leakage at the hinges.  I simply stopped to let that layer cool for a minute or two, then added a final top-up layer to get the lip balm to the top of the box).

Step 7:  Walk away and let it cool and harden for 24 hours.   I have no patience, so this was the hardest part for me, but it’s worthwhile.    You can go back and wipe up any mess before it’s totally hardened.  But do wait that 24 hours before using.

That’s all folks!   This combination of cocoa butter, almond oil and soy wax will keep your lips luscious and hydrated all winter!  I’ll definitely be whipping up more batches once I run out.  I’ve got the ingredients now, and it only takes about 15 minutes to make, once you know the recipe!

Pucker up!
